Transport |
After successful inroads into the banking industry, projects combining transport and banking applications looked extremely promising for the Java Card™ platforms and the jTOP
core was already prepared for this: the timing constraints of the transport market had been thought of right from the beginning. Some enhancements were made for the Java Card™ Virtual Machine to run satisfactorily in contactless mode.
Trusted Logic is at the heart of VISTA (Visa Infineon Sony Trusted Logic Alliance), the world’s most elaborate dual purpose platform: it encompasses a Java™ engine powered by Trusted Logic’s jTOP
core and the FeliCa™ native Operating System supplied by Sony Corporation.
This makes the card unique in its kind, allowing cardholders to bear a single card in their wallets for both EMV transactions (VSDC application in ROM) and convenient contactless transactions such as electronic money and public transportation (through FeliCa™ contactless interface). Apart from making two cards in one, the VISTA product also provides a pioneering cross-access functionality, which allows access to the Java Card™ GlobalPlatform framework in the FeliCa™ contactless environment, as well as access to the FeliCa™ Operating System through the traditional ISO contact-based protocols.
One other VISTA product is on its way (VISTA 2) with additional support for Type-B contactless protocol. Sony Corporation is the distributor of the VISTA products, licensing jTOP
from Trusted Logic.
Trusted Logic is also looking into other transport company schemes and has developed a Calypso Java Card™ applet for the French railway system RATP.
